BC Mag #1: Top 100 Power List For Comics 2012

BC Mag #1: Top 100 Power List For Comics 2012Bleeding Cool Magazine article by Rich Johnston.

Welcome to the first Top 100 Power List for comics. Its aim is to list the top 100 most powerful people in the English speaking comics industry.

But how do you define power in the comics industry? The ability to hire and fire? The ability to commission a comic – or stop it from happening? The ability to create a comic – and then make it sell? The ability to influence the work and work practices of others? What about the power of a position, but one that isn't reflected in the person who is holding it?
This list attempts to reflect all these issues, not just the possession of power, but someone actually using it to make a difference and committed to comics. As every super hero team knows, having more than one power on hand can be very useful. Which is why, in The Power List, many people are listed at a higher positions than their bosses. For example, can Diane Nelson draw a best-selling comic book and push it into the top ten single-handedly? The evidence suggests not.

This is an attempt to be honest and reflective about what the comic book industry is, rather than what we might like it to be. There are relatively few women. It is rather white. There's only one African American on the list. And there are plenty of people – myself included – who resemble The Simpsons Comic Book Guy more than we would like.
You won't agree with all of the people listed on here, let alone the order they are listed in. That, at least, I think we can agree on. Feel free to tell us why not, who we missed, and whose power we over-exaggerated.

But this is not just your average everyday power list. Every listing has a signature box. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to get an authentic signature of the people on the power list in their respective boxes. Photographs of the autographs occurring will help prove authenticity for the more elusive executives.

The grand prize for the first lucky soul who gets them all will be over $2,000 worth of graphic novels from our kind sponsors at Boom, Avatar, and IDW, as well as the prestige of The Man Or Woman Who Collected The Comic Book Industry, and an article about your collecting adventures on the web site. Over the next year, keep us aware of your progress on the Bleeding Cool message board at http://bcool.bz/top100-contest, and we will close this competition September 1, 2013. If no one has gotten them all, we'll award the prize to whomever has the most signatures at that time. Once you have 90 or more, do touch base.

A few of these will be really tough…

The basics are: Once you get above 90 signatures, you'll be a contender and you should be in touch with us. If you have them all, or if we are getting close to the end of the contest (Sept 1, 2013), we'll have you send in a photocopy of your magazine and any documenting photos for verification. We may ask for your original magazine in the event of questions about how authentic some signatures are, but we'd return it to you. If we end up with a tie, we will split up the goodies evenly amongst the tying parties (or see if we can get those publishers to pony up more books!) Be nice asking people for their autographs!
Any questions, please drop a line to rickverbanas@bleedingcool.com.

And yes, I'm on the list. I wrote it, didn't I? There are a few people ahead of me though.
