Incredibles 2 Review: A Heartwarming Sequel to One of Pixar's Best [Spoiler Free]
Incredibles 2 brings back the Barr family in this fantastic sequel to one of the best movies Pixar has ever made.
Director: Brad Bird
Summary: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) is left to care for Jack-Jack while Helen (Elastigirl) is out saving the world.
It's hard to top perfection, and that's pretty much what The Incredibles is for Pixar and Disney. It's the best movie they've made so far (in this reviewer's opinion), and fans have had to wait 14 years for this sequel. The nice thing is these are animated characters, so the movie can pick up right after the first one.
The Barr family has decided to use their powers for good despite it being against the law. When a fight against a super villain doesn't go well, Helen, aka Elastigirl, has to go out and try to improve their image while Bob, aka Mr. Incredible, has to be a stay-at-home Dad. The movie plays off of the various tropes of a stay-at-home Dad who is in over his head — only turned up to 11, because everyone has super powers.
One of the things that makes Incredibles 2 such a fun movie to watch is how seamlessly it blends the tropes of a family movie with the tropes of the superhero genre. Watching a baby is hard, but watching a baby with super powers is a whole new ball game. There is a fun new villain running around call Screen Slaver, which is a fantastic pun. This is one of those family movies where they might fight sometimes, but they all love each other at the end of the day and are willing to risk their lives for each other.
That said, there are a couple of flaws here and there. While the movie doesn't linger on it too much, there is the whole "husband is bitter that his wife is working" type of deal. But it also never makes Bob unlikable — it just helps you see the cracks when parenting becomes overwhelming. Out of the kids, Dash probably has the least enjoyable subplot, since it's mostly a homework type of story. There is also not nearly enough of Edna Mode, aka the greatest character ever. The reveal of the villain is going to be super obvious to parents, but it's going to likely blow the minds of the kids in the audience.
Incredibles 2 isn't as good as the first one, but it's about as close as we were ever going to get. Any flaws are minor, and fans of this series are going to be calling for more once the credits roll. Let's just hope we don't have to wait another 14 years for the next one.
