Jon Chad's Tiny Moment Of Genius, At San Diego Comic Con, With The Amazing Adventures Of Gumball
Jon Chad has a reputation for making gorgeous, tiny comic books on all manner of subjects. But when he wanted to make a comic, The Tasks using on The Amazing Worlds Of Gumball from Cartoon Network, like his Adventure Time and Regular Show work, he had to go all official.
And Boom! Studios had the license, so this San Diego Comic Con they were being sold under the kaBoom! imprint. And yes, this does look like a SNES cartridge rather than a comic book, but open it up…
And you get a hand cut 1:200 comic book, themed around retro gaming, and one particular game that starts to affect the main characters' real lives.
There are many different levels to gaming here, from the Renaissance, to the retro game itself, and the lives of those playing it,and the way one then leaks through to the other, seeming to invade reality itself.
It's a fun little book that reflects the tone of its story – just as it has different levels, so has your reading experience, aware that you have just opened up an old gaming case to read the comic. They have different layers of awareness, and so do you.
It really is my favourite treat of San Diego Comic Con and wanted to let you know why it might be worth tracking it down. No spoilers, but then I think the experience itself is impossible to spoil. It's a much smaller version of a Secret Cinema for comics – and one that can't be reproduced digitally.
And a QR Code takes us somewhere special as well…
