John Boyega Talks About the Differences Between Filming Star Wars and Pacific Rim Uprising
John Boyega is currently living the high life. He got his cinematic debut in the fantastic Attack the Block and now has two Star Wars films under his belt. However, Pacific Rim Uprising was something totally different for the young actor; this is the first time he's been a producer on a film as well. In an interview with Cinema Blend Boyega talked about what it was like being a producer on a film and how that was different from just acting in a film.
You're much more exposed to the ins and outs of the workings of setting up a production like this when you're producing as well as acting. A lot of the challenges on set are much more consistent. You hear about the potential things that could slow down a schedule, so it affects the experience of the whole thing, but it's beautiful. You meet filmmaking in its raw form. It's transparent and you know everything, and that to me is a different experience than obviously working as just an actor. But it was fun, I loved it. I really, really enjoyed it.
While producing is a totally different animal and one would think doing two jobs would make it harder it turned out that Boyega really enjoyed being able to track his own performance.
We get rushes every day. We're going through takes every day, and we're getting rough edits as soon as possible. So knowing how the body of the movie is shaping up to be, you know the way in which the character should go to a certain extent — what you want to convey much more. And that affects the whole thing.
Despite having a producer role that didn't mean Boyega was calling a lot of the shots. Instead it put him in a position where he had the opportunity to collaborate with everyone working on the movie.
I don't articulate 'authority.'… But what it is, is that you're in a position to collaborate with the idea makers, and give them your ideas. You go back and forth, and you shape up the movie through collaboration, and through teamwork. So that's something that's been very, very enjoyable.
Boyega has talked a lot about taking on the role of a producer on Pacific Rim Uprising and it sounds like he really enjoyed it. We can assume this won't be the last time we see him produce a movie going forward. Perhaps even another Pacific Rim movie if this second installment does well.
