It seems that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Charlie Day was asked who his favorite "Luigi" was in recent American history.

Article Summary

  • Charlie Day ranks his Luigi and Luigi Mangione as his top two favorites when asked about famous Luigis.
  • Day was joined by Keegan-Michael Key and Anna Taylor-Joy during a Super Mario Galaxy Movie press event.

When it comes to Rob MacCharlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito, we tend to be a bit protective. Because when you have FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on your resume, it buys you some serious long-term pop culture street cred. So, when they're off doing projects, we like to keep track of what they're up to – and what they might be getting themselves into. With Season 18 still in production, Day has been making the press rounds in support of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. During one media event, Day – who voices the popular Nintendo character Luigi in the film – was asked to name his favorite "Luigi" in recent American history. Hmmm… we wonder…

In the clip posted by Luigi Archive, Day was joined by his The Super Mario Galaxy Movie co-stars Keegan-Michael Key and Anna Taylor-Joy for an interview during an event in Tokyo, Japan, for the film. At one point during the conversation, Day was hit with what now seems like a really loaded question. "You play Luigi, a great Italian guy. Who's your favorite Luigi in recent American history?" the interviewer asks. "In recent American history?!" Day initially responded, followed by Day and Key laughing, and Taylor-Joy smiling and hiding her face with her hand.

"Well, me, first of all. Number one," Day noted, before adding a follow-up that went exactly where we should've seen it was going to go: "Uh, Luigi Mangione…Luigi Mangione number two." That response seemed to be what the interviewer was looking for, while everyone else laughed, with more smiling and face-hiding from Taylor-Joy. For those of you who may have been spending some time outside of the pop culture landscape, Luigi Mangione is charged with allegedly killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City in December 2024. Since his arrest, a social media following has grown in support of Mangione, with many viewing him as a kind of "Robin Hood."

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Charlie Day Talks Season 18

While checking in recently with TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle to support the film, Day and co-star Chris Pratt talked up the film and what viewers can expect with co-hosts Sheinelle Jones and Ashley Graham. When the topic turned to the long-running series, Day credited having "a lot of talented, really funny writers" and that "the world just keeps giving us crazy things" to target every season, offering AI as an example. As for what viewers can expect from Season 18, Day teased that we'll see The Gang at a Renaissance Faire and mixed up in Little League sports.

As for the season overall, Day believes Season 18 will build off the success of the previous season. "They're all fairly large episodes. But I feel like Season 17, we got a bit of our fastball back, and we brought back the same room and had the same chemistry. So Season 18 here, I think, is going to just pick up right where we left off. I can guarantee there will be some episodes that people will love," he added while speaking with Deadline Hollywood's SXSW Studio.

Previously, actor, writer, and executive producer David Hornsby and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro both confirmed on social media that they would be back this season. Hornsby complimented the artists who helped get him back into Matthew "Rickety Cricket" Mara mode in his post, while del Toro posted a close-up of himself, teasing: "Pappy is coming back" (a reference to his role as Pappy McPoyle).
