"Hellraiser" – Pinhead to Have At Least One Season to Know Your Flesh: Cenobites Series-Bound
So horror movies continue to ride a wave of box office success while anthology series seem to be a bit of a rage right now (episode-per-episode like CBS All Access' The Twilight Zone from Jordan Peele or season-long like Hulu's Stephen King "shared universe" series Castle Rock). Add in a slow-building nostalgic reboot wave for 80's/80's horror (Child's Play), and you've got a "perfect storm" of situations that seem perfect for It producer Roy Lee and Ready Player One producer Dan Farah to bring Pinhead and his fellow Cenobites from Hellraiser to the small screen.
Lee and Farah are working with producer-rightsholders Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, and Eric Gardner on the series. The trio have controlled the television rights since original rights owner New World was sold in 1989 – with Spyglass owning the feature rights. Producer are currently searching for a writer-showrunner before shopping the project to a network, cable network, or streamer.
The series is expected to build off the mythology established in the movie franchise as well as from Clive Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart, though whether it will go the Halloween route of recognizing the first (hopefully) two films and ignoring the subsequent films remains to be seen. It's also not known if the show will adopt an episode-per-episode or season-long anthology format.
First published in November 1986, here's a look at Barker's The Hellbound Heart:
At last he had solved the puzzle of Lemarchand's box. He was standing on the threshold of a world of heightened sensations. In moments the Cenobites – who had dedicated an eternity to the pursuit of sensuality – would be here. They would reveal dark secrets that would transform him forever.
Now here's a look at the trailers for the only two films they should consider basing the series from: 1987's Hellraiser and 1988's Hellbound: Hellraiser II:
An unfaithful wife encounters the zombie of her dead lover; the demonic cenobites are pursuing him after he escaped their sadomasochistic underworld.
Doctor Channard is sent a new patient, a girl warning of the terrible creatures that have destroyed her family, Cenobites who offer the most intense sensations of pleasure and pain. But Channard has been searching for the doorway to Hell for years, and Kirsty must follow him to save her father and witness the power struggles among the newly damned.
