Bendis Begins His Bye Byes (Jessica Jones #16, Iron Man #596, Defenders #9 Spoilers)

Brian Bendis is leaving Marvel Comics for DC Comics. But on his way out, he's going round the houses to prepare the way for those who will follow him. Which means, in Defenders, one more go at his meta-police station gag, with a cosplayer being manhandled by police, shouting out continuity points from other comic books.. It began in Ultimate Spider-Man 17 years ago, but soon spilled into any scene set in a police station that he happened to be writing. Here are a few…

But there's a little more meta to spread first. Delusions of grandeur?

So, how is Brian leaving his comic books? Well, as Riri Williams begins to give up her identity and Tony Stark makes his comeback, the Starkified Doctor Doom is having his own issues with the Hood, the Bryan Vaughan-created villain-and-occasional-hero who works as a what-if version of Peter Parker, Spider-Man and has been peppered through Bendis' books as well. First coming a lot closer to taking down Doom than Doom thinks he should.

While the end of the Defenders suggests he will have a much greater role to play…

The Hood is getting a power up and becoming the new Kingpin? Delusions of grandeur? Shared by the Purple Man?

Jessica Jones is also a what-if Spider-Man, having been in the same class as Peter Parker at school… and like the Hood learned different lessons about power and responsibility.
