Brian Michael Bendis Explains Why Superman is Wearing the Red Shorts Again #TheTrunksAreBack [SPOILERS]
Part of the publicity for Brian Michael Bendis taking over the Superman books (much to the chagrin of the rather successful creative teams at the time, as well as the launch of Action Comics #1000), was that Superman would finally be wearing his red trunks again. The iconic underwear-on-the-outside originally modelled on the trunks that stage strongmen would wear over their tights in the 1930s.
And in Action Comics #1000, from Bendis and Jim Lee, it came up.
Again and again from Bendis's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern equivalents. But no explanation was given.
Well in Man of Steel #6, released last night at midnight from DC Comics, by Bendis and Jason Fabok, we got an explanation. Because as of this issue everyone is off.
Jonathan Kent is getting a tour of the galaxy from Jor-El. Lois Lane is coming along, with a book deal in tow.
And Supergirl is going on a journey herself to find out the truth about Krypton and Rogol Zaar — who claims to have destroyed their home planet.
Turns out that Superman gave his tightless costume to Lois Lane as she begins her great journey with their son Jonathan Kent. And also helps Bendis get rid of Lois, Jonathan, Kara, and Jor-El from clogging up his continuity so he can get on with telling just-Superman stories for a good long while.
Oh, and he can't even talk to them.
So Superman may have lost his wife, son, cousin, and father (again) — but at least he got his trunks back out of the deal.
