David Glanzer took the stage at the end of Joss Whedon's panel to make an announcement. He spoke about his love for Joss Whedon, and his accomplishments as a filmmaker and comics creator, which embodies the spirit of Comic-Con. He "loves it all", and that encourages fandom as an "amazing gift". Glanzer called out Firefly as his favorite show. Fans flock to his projects and love his old ones, and Glanzer was honored to "add the name of Joss Whedon" to the list of former recipients including Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller.
Whedon received a standing ovation from the whole of Hall H when receiving the award. He joked that it was the "most beautiful murder weapon" he'd ever received and thanked them for "scratching out JJ" so carefully on the award. He said he didn't expect to be moved by it, but he was, and did appear emotional, searching for words. He exited the stage to massive applause.
