Reading Mark Haverty's Uncanny X-Men #1 review today, and reflecting on some of the comics that have made mainstream-news headlines over the past year, it's interesting to note that the decades-long ebb and flow of comics' engagement with political and social subjects of the times is once again on the rise. And with the civilian audience noticing, you can feel that feedback loop closing and propelling the whole thing forward. Yet another reason 2012 is going to be an interesting year in comics.

Yet, despite the strong political implications involving a persecuted minority, those stories faded into the background with the departure of Chris Claremont at the end of 1991. Deep discussions of morality and political implications get in the way of a good slugfest that crosses over between 12 titles, comes polybagged, and includes a special collectible card that you could care less about.
DC Comics Cancels Fifth Volume OF R.E.B.E.L.S.
Sorry folks, if you were waiting on the fifth volume of the R.E.B.E.L.S. trade paperback line. Due to be published at the end of the year, Starstruck by Tony Bedard and Claude St Aubin is still available to order from Amazon. But sadly, it won't be in your Christmas stocking, DC have cancelled it.

Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns work incredibly well on Blu-ray. The extreme long shots tend towards the rich, clear and vivid and often seem almost three dimensional; the extreme close-ups are intensely detailed, and can be visceral, piercing. I've always loved his Dollars trilogy – For a Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly – but in HD, I love them more.
James Bond Skyfall Special – A Rushes Round-Up With Lots Of Good Stuff
Let's start with some pictures from the set of Skyfall, the Sam Mendes-directed James Bond film. These reveal one of Bond's cars for the new picture… a Land Rover. That he isn't even driving himself. And he's got a stubbly little beard. Certain purists must be having fits.
