The Sequel To Sicario, 'Soldado', Will Make The Original "Look Like A Comedy"
Sicario was an unexpected hit of 2015. It was a hard-as-nails crime thriller that didn't pull any punches when it came the reality of the situation they were portraying. It helped launch the career of Taylor Sheridan from actor to Oscar-nominated writer and now director. Sheridan is one of the breakout stories of Hollywood and his first movie as writer and director, Wind River, is out this week. Collider caught up with Sheridan and asked him about the status of the Sicario sequel Soldado:
"When I told them I would write it, they asked for the traditional studio call and the outline and all that, and I said, 'No, no, no, guys. The first one was original. I'm just going to go away and I'm going to come back with it and there you go.' And they trusted me to do that, and then read it and were like, 'Ah, shit. We're in a lot of trouble.' It makes the first one look like a comedy. Yeah. I'm not the guy to ask to write a sequel."
On the contrary, sir. You sound exactly like the guy to ask to write a sequel. Sicario didn't pull any punches, but from what Sheridan is saying, the sequel is going to just straight up punch us. When Collider spoke to Sheridan back at Sundance, he also spoke on the sequel:
"I would say if Sicario is a film about the militarization of police and that blending over, this is removing the policing aspect from it."
It's a shame that Emily Blunt nor director Denis Villeneuve are returning for the film, but it sounds like Sheridan not only knows the story he wants to tell, but had the freedom to tell it when and how he wanted. That's the kind of freedom writers are rarely afforded and considering how good all of his movies have been so far? That was the right call to make.
Summary: A follow-up to the 2015 film 'Sicario', which centers around the escalating war against drugs along the border of the United States and Mexico.
Soldado, directed by Stefano Sollima, stars Josh Brolin, Isabela Moner, Benicio Del Toro, Matthew Modine, and Jeffrey Donovan. It has a unspecified 2017 release date.
