Fidel Castro's Ties To DC's Invasion

Fidel Castro's passing yesterday made me think of how someone so polarizing in world history spent so much time in the pop culture. His likeness has appeared in or he has been a topic in a plethora of television shows, movies, comics and novels. More than just dramatizations of the Cuban Missile Crisis or the Bay of Pigs.

The first thing that popped into my mind was the pilot episode of Head of the Class, a sitcom from the late 80's that stared Howard Hessman and Robin Givens. Hessman played a substitute teacher named Charlie Moore who got assigned to teach a class for gifted students… really smart, not mutants… The job was to babysit them and read a magazine, but Moore saw the kids as spending so much time studying they weren't living life. He spent the episode trying to teach them that life isn't just about the facts. He used a simple question… how was a baseball key to starting the Cuban Missile Crisis. It took the whole class before the kids wanted to know the answer… which was that in 1951 Fidel Castro had a tryout with the Washington Senators as a pitcher, but his fastball wasn't fast enough. He returned to Cuba and got into politics. Now, the tryout story has since been debunked, but it worked well in the episode.

He also appeared in comics many times, ironically the first one that popped back into my head last night was something we've been talking about a lot lately… DC's Invasion event. The same series that inspired the 4- series crossover starting Monday on the CW. In the series, Castro and his aids are attacked but escape. The shape-shifting Durlan's replace him. The real Castro runs into the Flash and the speedster helped Castro take back his country. To say thank you, Castro throws Wally West a birthday party. The page below shows Castro giving Wally a bit of a history lesson.

It's believed that the Invasion story on the CW will follow the comics somewhat closely and Legends of Tomorrow has been using real historical figures this season… might we see Fidel Castro deal with the Durlans this week? The timing would be interesting.
