Today, Ms America Answers Captain America Over What That Letter A Stands For…
It was Al Ewing's fortieth birthday the other day, and today's New Comics Day is very much in celebration of the writer, with three comics from Marvel published today with his name on them. US Avengers #9 with Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, Alex Arizmendi, Jesus Aburtov and Rachelle Rosenberg on art. Ultimates2 #100 with Travel Foreman, Filip Andrade, Marco Lorenzana, Scott Hannah, Dan Brown and Matt Yackey. And The Royals #6 with Kevin Libranda and Jose Villarubia.
As well as telling rip-roaring stories for Marvel Comics right now (Rocket is probably my favourite) he also drops in all manner of comic book references along the way, some obscure, some less so. We mentioned one for Ken Reid's Faceache from a previous issue of Avengers earlier today.
Such as with the final issue of The Ultimates, reprising possibly its most memorable or infamous moment from the first run of the book by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch.
And now finally getting a reply that question by Miss America Chavez.
Looks like he felt that through the… okay I forget what the Ultimate Captain America's shield was made out of, but still… (googles) made in Asgard. So, you know. Impressive. And then going on to create a brand new cosmic superteam for the Marvel universe – all of them.
Then over in The Royals, he revisits the Universal Inhumans from Jonathan Hickman's run on The Fantastic Four (below) other races that have received terrigenesis…
But in The Royals he has decided to name their Inhuman races within their own species, giving us the Incenturians, the fifth Caste and…
… The Direst Wraiths. Which feels like a joke he has waited a lifetime to tell. Talking of which, in US Avengers, with Paris under the control of Hydra…
If those last lines sound familiar, they should, from France's most famous comic book of all…
And then, not even bothering with an allusion, just outright saying it.
That's the British Punisher there. Al Ewing still writes 2000AD and Judge Dredd as well – though not today's issue. So happy birthday, sir! Keep doing very silly things with other people's toys, even in your forties…
