The Next Nonplayer – Undying Love?
A week and a half away, we already know that Nonplayer by Nate Simpson from Image Comics will be the big breakout hit of 2011. It's a given. Joining Chew, Morning Glories, Skullkickers and 27 as Image breakout hits. But what else is coming out shortly that may challenge it?
Undying Love by Tomm Coker and Daniel Freeman is a beautiful book that puts you in mind of Arthur Ranson and Button Man, full of noir and detailed photographic reference throughout and statted panels. This kind of thing may annoy some but here it's perfect when you find yourself facing statues and foxes in an attempt to save the life of your undead love.
Because, yes, that's the twist here. The classic plot of the man trying to save the life of the poisoned women he loves, but in this case the poison is vampirism and the setting is Hong Kong and China as a whole. To paraphrase Blues Brothers "Chinese vampires. I hate Chinese vampires".
It's a beautiful book, but it may prove too static for its audience, panels showing stills in time rather than giving the illusion of movement. But damn those streets of Hong Kong look gorgeous.
Undying Love is published this week from Image Comics.
