Universal Are Building The Cabin In The Woods As A Theme Park Attraction
Ed Brown writes for Bleeding Cool
At least around these parts, it's a widely accepted fact that Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's Cabin In The Woods was a joy to behold, innovative and entertaining enough for the first two acts but really kicking into top gear for an incredible finale.
Without spoiling things too much, a brilliant array of horror characters were introduced over the course of this one film, and it's not really a surprise that Universal now want to take those characters further.
Their new direction for the cabin crew will be an official themed 'maze' at Universal Orlando. Entertainment Team member Michael Aiello told Zap2it:
We are building the cabin completely. You're going to walk through a forest to get there. You're going into the cabin. You're going to go into the cube cells. We're literally taking everything we can in the film and giving you a kind of best-of montage of the film with this kind of linking story.
That sounds incredible. The maze is said to be made up mostly of "scare-actors" rather than animatronics, which means that it could be ten times more frightening than a "regular" haunted house attraction.
Aiello also promised an up-front encounter with what might be he most terrifying bit of the film:
You're going to be in the control room when merman attacks.
If that promise doesn't mean anything to you, then I urge you to go watch the movie. It's by no means the typical cabin in the woods story, but I'm sure you got that already. Now. Go see it now.
Cabin In The Woods' director Drew Goddard is fully supporting the attraction as a next step in the story, and seems to be a big part of Universal's process, even going so far as to provide set layouts and scripts for a story that will parallel the film.
I think this is going to be huge. Horror mazes are fashionable right now. Brown pants are the new black.
The Cabin in the Woods maze will only be at Universal Orlando, running on select nights from September 20 to November 2. If, by some dark miracle, the event somehow makes its way across the Atlantic to one of our theme parks, I promise you that I'll be there just as quick as you can say "Zombie Redneck Torture Family."
