Where She Walks
Ambria Rourke is okay. She doesn't mind when people call her Ambria, but she prefers to be called Bri, which she finds much less formal. She is 35 when we meet her. She is tall, with long, dark brown hair, pale skin and green eyes. She is a pretty girl, but in a unique and unexpected way; she can seem unremarkable to people who don't know her, until she smiles. She has a bright and uplifting smile, if a little weary.
She works Monday to Friday in the downtown offices of Mason and Swerris Recruiting as a Contract Manager. She's been with the company for 7 years and talks herself out of quitting bi-weekly. It's not her life's work or dream job, but she doesn't know what her life's work or dream job is, so she settles for financial security in the meantime. She just kind of goes through the motions and rationalizes her inaction with every manner of excuse from financial reasons to timing, and back again.
Ambria wants to believe in so much more than the mundane, more than she can see, hear or touch. But like so many of us, she finds herself too much in this world, unable to see past the realities of this day-to-day society; the world of bills to pay, traffic jams, material goods to consume, where we move against nature, where routine can make us feel safe and trap us at the same time.
And Bri is having nightmares. She is beginning to fray when we first meet her; searching, scared, and feeling very much alone against the demons that haunt her in the night.
Where She Walks is a free-to-read graphic novel with pages being updated weekly. Brother and sister team, Nathan Millar and Erin Millar launched the website at the beginning of December 2012. It is Bri's story, beginning with the poetry of the Prologue in Three Parts. The first poem is The Path That Follows, which takes us through a day in Bri's life. In a muted colour palette, Nathan and Erin are using the poem to examine that haunting feeling most people are familiar with, that feeling that there is something just past our field of vision, something magnificent we long for but can't name.
Please join us for Bri's journey, which is a journey of the heart, a journey back to the simplest truth that we are meant to follow our heart. Even though it may take us outside the boundaries of routine, past the world we are familiar with, to a land beyond the stars.
