Fanboy Rampage: Rob Liefeld versus Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Avon Oeming and Direct Edition Podcast on... Threads???
Article Summary
- Rob Liefeld clashes with Brian Michael Bendis fans over the legacy of Ultimate Spider-Man on Threads.
- Direct Edition podcast and Michael Avon Oeming weigh in on Liefeld’s online confrontational style.
- Liefeld defends his Captain America sales and Deadpool’s originality amid ongoing criticism.
- Debate stirs creator insecurities, but Bendis himself remains silent as others fuel the feud.
Comic book reader King Ryan posted innocently on Threads, saying, "I think Brian Michael Bendis 'ultimate Spider-Man' is up there with Ditko and Stan Lee's amazing fantasy run. Genuinely some of the best spider-man comics you can read." "
And Rob Liefeld, whose new podcast is just dropping and has been popping up on Threads, replied with "Hahaha – Bendis directly takes from the Lee/Ditko classics and puts them in a modern setting. The credit is due to Lee/Ditko. Not the fresh coat of paint brushed over them. Geezus. What a terrible take."

King Ryan added "Up there with" meaning one of the greatest iterations of the character since Lee and Ditko. Just to avoid any further rudeness or confusion." But it was too late, the outrage machine was off! And plenty of folk posted pictures of feet, Liefeld swipes, Captain America breasts, the usual. No one asked about his mostly-unfulfilled Brigade Kickstarter from thirteen years ago, but it was open season on everything else.
With some comparing Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man more favourably to Liefeld's own reinvention of Captain America, Liefeld defended his work, saying, "You are the most uninformed clown. I took Cap from 25k to 350k sales. With 2 covers. I told my stories, Marvel filed for bankruptcy, tried to renegotiate my fee down, and I waved goodbye. The 2nd half of that series is a collapse not of my making."
The Direct Edition podcast then posted "You know, I'm something of a 90's kid, and let me tell you, the Rob Liefeld I met at the Javits centre back when I was a kid was WAY nicer to people than what I see now. It's a f-cking shame, he could be like his image brethren and be cool, friendly and respectful l, but he chooses this weird bully/king of the mountain kind of attitude. I truly don't get it. And as someone who's spent a few hours talking/recording with Silvestri/Larsen/Todd, I can tell you that's not the way they act." Rob Liefeld replied, "So maybe now you will stop asking me to be on your show?" They replied, "Oh, you don't have to worry about that."
But it seems there wasn't a minor enough post for him not to respond to on Threads. Such as "I based Deadpool off Spider-Man. Singing that song since I introduced him. And?" "Deadpool has made me millions of dollars. What is the point again?" and "You are nowhere near the value of my collection and catalogue. My Youngblood sales are amazing. Try again. Harder."
The Deathstroke/Deadpool/Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson comparison kept coming up. And Liefeld kept replying, "None of this is true. This is not Deadpool. And was not compared to Deadpool until the 2000's. Deathstroke outweighs him by 100lbs here. But, sure you were right there alongside me in 1990….. (you weren't)"
Michael Avon Oeming, oft-Bendis collaborator and co-creator of Powers with Bendis, sub-threaded, "If you ever see a comics creator publicly sh-t-talking another creator, it is because they are on some level unhappy or insecure with their career or life. Especially when they are already successful, there's no other reason for it. Just be cool, enjoy what you've built, wish well for others."
But Liefeld still saw it and replied, "Yes, so very insecure that I can share my true opinions without remorse. This is categorically bullsh-t. By stating that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko deserve the praise for the genius of Spider-Man harms no one. Am I insecure every time I've praised Powers? I celebrate comic book achievements. Unafraid to speak my mind. Also am 💯 not concerned with being liked. Ever."
Oeming replied normally, saying, "My feeling is that creators get enough criticism and personal attacks from the public, we shouldn't do it to each other. I've always defended you, because you've inspired a ton of artists, and that's no small thing. Speaking your mind is great but taking digs at others is less so. Good luck out there."
And Rob Liefeld concludes, "My life is spectacular. That won't prevent me from speaking truth." Later, adding "Someone telling you that offering your opinion is a result of insecurity or unhappiness is being disingenuous on every level. What they are saying is that they are afraid to share their own opinions. It is massive gaslighting that reveals their own inability to speak truth. Apply this same exact notion to sports or politics and you see how insane it is. So, only insecure people share opinions? Dumbest sh-t I've ever heard."
And Brian Michael Bendis? He said… nothing.
