Daniel Radcliffe Comments on the Johnny Depp Controversy in Fantastic Beasts

Warner Bros. found themselves in a bit of a pickle with their Harry Potter spinoff series. After getting a huge star like Johnny Depp to play their villain for multiple movies, allegations of domestic abuse resurfaced and the situation was once again in the public eye. Warner Bros. and the production team decided not to cut Depp from the movie and offered a questionable defense as to why they decided to keep him on. Entertainment Weekly recently asked Daniel Radcliffe if he had any opinion on this matter.

"It's a very hard thing for me," Radcliffe said, noting he wants to be supportive of the film's producers who "gave me a great start in life and an amazing job."

However, Radcliffe did understand why people were frustrated with that response, due to the previous incidents that have happened with cast members in Harry Potter and the law.

"I can see why people are frustrated with the response that they were given from that … I'm not saying anything that anybody hasn't already said — and this is a weird analogy to draw — [but] in the NFL, there are lots of players arrested for smoking weed and there is other people's behavior that goes way beyond that and it's tolerated because they're very famous players. I suppose the thing I was struck by was, we did have a guy who was reprimanded for weed on the [original Potter] film, essentially, so obviously what Johnny has been accused of is much greater than that."

Radcliffe is referring to actor Jamie Waylett, who played the bully Vincent Crabb in six movies. However, Waylett was fired when it was discovered that he was growing marijuana. They aren't the same thing; Waylett was convicted of a crime while Depp has only been accused, but there is a precedent set that fans have every right to bring up.

Summary: The second installment of the 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' series, which follows the adventures of Newt Scamander.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, directed by David Yates, will star Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. It will be released on November 16th.
