Article Summary
- A Weapons prequel film centered on Aunt Gladys is in development with Zach Shields and Zach Cregger writing.
- The project follows the critical and box office success of Weapons, which premiered last summer.
- Shields will co-write with Cregger, who also directed and wrote the original film for Warner Bros. and New Line.
- The prequel, tentatively titled Gladys, explores the enigmatic backstory of a fan-favorite character.
A Weapons prequel movie has been whispered about since the film absolutely exploded last summer. It's the way of the horror movie, even if one of the things that makes horror work is that 'fear of the unknown.' For Weapons, not knowing what happened to these kids and the mystery being so creepy were the entire point of the film and a major source of tension and atmosphere, but that's neither here nor there. People fell in love with Amy Madigan and her performance as Aunt Gladys, and now that she has the Oscars, no one should be surprised that the prequel film, which had been in a rather nebulous state, is now a reality. According to Deadline, Zach Shields is set to write the screenplay for the prequel alongside Weapons director and writer Zach Cregger. The working title is Gladys because, of course, it is.

At the time of writing, we don't have any additional information about this prequel film, and a script doesn't always mean the film is going to happen. Cregger has other projects to work on, and maybe someone at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema will remember that whole "fear of the unknown" and how rarely a horror prequel ends up working out. Just ask Lionsgate – they just managed to fail three times.
