'American Gods' Season 2, Episode 4: Is "The Greatest Story Ever Told" Nothing But A Lie? [PREVIEW]
Last week's episode of STARZ's American Gods "Muninn" had our old gods and their allies back on their respective road trips, as both the new and old gods prep for a war that pretty much feel inevitable at this point. But even with Jinn (Mousa Kraish) and Salim (Omid Abtahi) successful on their mission to secure Wednesday's (Ian McShane) weapon, and Wednesday and Laura (Emily Browning) effectively taking out "The Eye in the Sky," things weren't just shaping up for the old ones.
On the new god side, Mr. World (Crispin Glover) got his "media" back in the form of New Media (Kahyun Kim) – who Tech Boy (Bruce Langley) is learning firsthand is nothing like her previous version. This Media is her own "god," not like the past – which she appears to either salute or mock with a Marilyn Monroe visual reference – where she served at the side of World. Meanwhile, World is making overtures to Bilquis (Yetide Badaki) – who is learning firsthand that there's no such thing as "sitting this one out" anymore.
And then there's Shadow (Ricky Whittle), whose life just got a little bit better – and maybe even sees more of a path ahead for him than he first realized – all thanks to Sam Black Crow (Devery Jacobs).
In the following preview for this week's "The Greatest Story Ever Told," Mr. Ibis (Demore Barnes) shares the history of the Ibis and Jacquel Funeral Home with Shadow – an enlightening experience, for sure. While in the promo that follows, is the impossible… possible?
Can Mr. World and Mr. Wednesday stop the war before it starts – and before another god is sacrificed?
American Gods s02e04 "The Greatest Story Ever Told": While Shadow and Mr. Wednesday take a secret meeting in St. Louis, Bilquis arrives at the funeral home in Cairo, where she engages in a debate with Mr. Nancy and Mr. Ibis. Laura rejoins Mad Sweeney, and Tech Boy pays a visit to his first worshipper. Directed by Stacie Passon and written by Peter Calloway & Aditi Brennan Kapil.
Here's a look at the official image gallery from STARZ for this week's episode of American Gods season 2, "The Greatest Story Ever Told":
American Gods has some new players in play this season who will definitely complicate Shadow's journey of self and spiritual discovery:
Dean Winters' brutally efficient and precise Mr. Town is tasked by Mr. World to learn what Shadow knows about Wednesday's plan.
First Nations actor Devery Jacobs is college student Sam Black Crow: a spiritually cynical young woman who lives her life with fierce confidence and openness, selling her chainsaw art by the roadside for extra money.
Kahyun Kim's New Media is the goddess of global content: a cyberspace chameleon who's also a master manipulator.
Sakina Jaffrey's Hindu war goddess Mama-Ji: a waitress at the Motel America, her necklace of skulls, acerbic wit and free spirit make her a match for any mighty god or man.
For those of you who still need a refresher course on the first season, two options: a down-n-dirty 3 minute recap, or a slightly longer deep-dive into the overall story and mythology:
We were forged in God's image, but the Gods are also made in ours — and in Season Two the battle moves inexorably toward crisis point as the destinies of gods and men collide. While Mr. World plots revenge for the attack against him in Season One, Shadow throws in his lot with Wednesday's attempt to convince the Old Gods of the case for full-out war, with Laura and Mad Sweeney in tow. A council at the House on the Rock explodes into chaos, sending deities both Old and New on quests across America that will converge on Cairo, Illinois: forcing Shadow to carve out a place as a believer in this strange new world of living gods — a dark world where change demands commitment, and faith requires terrible sacrifice.
