Star Trek: Prodigy: Would Kate Mulgrew Make Live-Action Return?

Star Trek: Prodigy star Kate Mulgrew on the series' storytelling and what it would take for her to consider a live-action return as Janeway.

Since Star Trek's return to television with the introduction of Paramount+, it's been a blend of the old and the new with Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and Prodigy. While the Nickelodeon animated series has made a new permanent home in the Netflix galaxy, the franchise's legacy continues to expand at its main hub on Paramount+ with Starfleet Academy in development, Section 31 spinoff streamer exclusive film with Michelle Yeoh getting a first look at San Diego Comic-Con, and the new live-action comedy series from Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome announced, the future's looking bright. Two of the biggest legacy series beneficiaries are The Next Generation and Voyager, with the UPN series star Kate Mulgrew lending her voice to the Dan and Kevin Hageman animated series, speaking to Cinemablend at San Diego Comic-Con on a possible live-action return for the character.

Star Trek: Prodigy Star Kate Mulgrew on Returning to Live-Action

Joining Mulgrew on Prodigy for season two were fellow Voyager alum stars Robert Beltran and Robert Picardo, reprising their roles as Chakotay and The Doctor. The former first officer of the U.S.S. Voyager was made captain of the experimental U.S.S. Protostar where he was trying to stop the Vau N'Akat from using it to destroy the Federation. Prodigy season two brought back two faces from TNG with Gates McFadden, who also returned for Picard season three, and Wil Wheaton, who did the same for season two, reprising their roles as Dr. Beverly Crusher and son, Wesley Crusher. Wheaton saw his character at his most involved since his days on TNG protecting time and space as a traveler.

When asked if we will see Mulgrew put on her Starfleet uniform again as Vice Admiral Janeway, "You know, this thing is always going around and around and around because fans, I think, would very much like to see her reinvoked. But I talked to these [Prodigy] guys last night at dinner about this," she said. "One has to be very careful that the situation is not hubristic. That does not interest me at all. Because, for the lack of a better word — and I loathe this word — the legacy is already in place. I was the first female Captain. I gave it everything I had for seven years, and it changed my life dramatically. To come back, it would have to be spectacularly good. And I don't know if that's possible."

Mulgrew's last physical appearance as Janeway was in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, the final TNG film, in a cameo appearance interacting with Sir Patrick Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E near the beginning of the film, informing him of the political situation on Romulus. Things came full circle as Prodigy season two eventually caught up to the events of Picard season one. For more including how Mulgrew feels if Netflix decides not to renew for season three, you can check out the entire interview here.
