Kelly Thompson's Frustration With Captain Marvel Omnibus Name Changes

Kelly Thompson expresses her frustration as a fan over the name changes to her Captain Marvel omnibuses from Marvel Comics

Article Summary

  • Kelly Thompson voices fan frustration over Captain Marvel Omnibus naming inconsistencies
  • Marvel renamed the second Captain Marvel Omnibus, disrupting collector shelf uniformity
  • Extra material and delayed release added confusion for fans of the collected editions
  • Thompson urges for more creator-focused branding and a Jeff the Land Shark omnibus

While talking to friends of Bleeding Cool Omar and Melanie of the Near Mint Condition YouTube channel, out of nowhere, Kelly Thompson started talking about her frustrations with Marvel's collected editions of her Captain Marvel work in full fangirl mode, her hopes for proper omnibus releases of her fan-favourite runs, and Jeff the Land Shark. Kelly Thompson wanted to address issues surrounding the collected editions of her long-running Captain Marvel series, particularly the decision to rename volumes in ways that confused readers, collectors… and her.

Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson Omnibus Vol 1 was released in 2023 and collected her work on Captain Marvel (2019) #1–26 as well as Captain Marvel: The End. Volume 2 was initially planned to collect the rest of Thompson's main Captain Marvel #27–50, and the 2022 Annual, with a simple "by Kelly Thompson" branding, similar to Volume 1, and planned for 2024/early 2025. However, it faced delays, and last year Marvel renamed it Captain Marvel: Highest, Furthest, Fastest Omnibus Vol 1. Which broke the clean "by Kelly Thompson" branding that Volume 1 began, making the pair look less uniform on shelves. The new title sounded more like a thematic or event-style collection rather than a direct continuation of the creator-focused omnibus line. Some fans had pre-ordered or budgeted expecting the straightforward Vol. 2 title and had to adjust when the project was delayed and rebranded. Marvel Comics also added significant extra material that wasn't in the original Volume 2 plan, such as the X-Men #19–21 crossover, Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest #1–5 from 2023, Captain Marvel: Assault on Eden #1, and the non-Thompson Captain Marvel #1–10 from 2023. It is now finally being published later this year.

Kelly Thompson noted that while such changes might seem minor, they create real headaches for fans trying to complete their libraries. "Renaming impacts fans more than creators," Thompson explained, emphasising that the frustration is felt most acutely by readers navigating inconsistent titling across omnibuses and trades. The writer acknowledged that creators often have limited input on final packaging and marketing decisions for collected editions.

Kelly Thompson also expressed strong support for a comprehensive omnibus collecting Jeff The Land Shark's various appearances, from his early cameos to the popular It's Jeff! Infinity Comics and print tie-ins, as well as her Hawkeye series starring Kate Bishop. But she says that while digital-first series like It's Jeff! are popular, bridging them to print collections in a fan-friendly way, remains an ongoing puzzle for publishers. And noted that many writers and artists discover final solicitations and titles at the same time as fans….
