Billy Porter Talks Playing a Genderless Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella"
Did you know Sony is working on its own version of Cinderella? Well, they very much are and so far the cast is looking like it's going to be a lot of fun. The cast includes Camila Cabello, Pierce Brosnan, Minnie Driver, Missy Elliott, Idina Menzel, Nicholas Galitzine, Maddie Baillio, Charlotte Spencer, John Mulaney, Romesh Ranganathan, and James Corden. Actor Billy Porter, the first openly gay black male to win an Emmy, is playing the Fairy Godmother and he is very much looking forward to bringing a genderless version of that character to the big screen. In an interview with CBS News, he explained that magic has no gender.
"It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother — they call it the Fab G. Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless — at least that's how I'm playing it. And it's really powerful," he said, adding this Cinderella is going to be "a classic fairytale for a new generation."
The idea of revamping fairytales is hardly a new one and this isn't even the first time someone has tried something different with Cinderella. Porter went on to say that he believes that this generation of kids is ready for something new and different from their fairytales and that it's the adults that are holding us back.
"I think the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It's the grownups that are slowing stuff down," he said.
Sony's new version of Cinderella is directed by Kay Cannon and is due to come out on February 5, 2021.
