[SPOILERS] The Explanation Behind The Final Scene In 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

There was a major twist in the final scene that is a game changer and Kevin Feige has talked to Cinema Blend about it. It's a huge spoiler though so unless you've seen Spider-Man: Homecoming probably best to move along.

[SPOILERS] The Explanation Behind The Final Scene In 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'The final scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming has Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returning home from Avengers HQ. He has just turned down an opportunity to be an Avengers so he can keep his feet on the ground a little longer. When he walks into his room he sees a bag that contains the Stark suit that Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) took away earlier in the film. Peter puts on the suit, without the mask, and as he is standing in his room we see Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) standing in the doorway. She says "what the f–" and the screen cuts to the credits.

That is a big deal because his loved ones finding out who he is has never ended well for Peter in the comics. It's a dynamic we haven't explored in the movies yet and considering one of the thing that Homecoming could have used more of was Aunt May. Marvel boss Kevin Feige talked about the decision to out Peter to one of the people that could get hurt by his super hero lifestyle.

J. Michael Straczynski did an issue when he was doing his run of Spidey many years ago where she discovered the secret. I think it was in the laundry or something, and they had a sit-down scene. And probably going back to Spider-Man 2, I would sort of carry that issue around and go, 'We should do this someday, we should do this someday.' And it was great luck that it hadn't been done yet. That was always part of the plan.

And very much like our instinct to say, 'Let's have Tony Stark say "I'm Iron Man" at the end. Well, what does that mean for the next movie? I don't know, but it will force us to do something unique. We did not want to do the secret identity thing at that point in the MCU. And now, same thing. The dynamic now is forced to be something fresh and something unique going forward.

[SPOILERS] The Explanation Behind The Final Scene In 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'It's true that no one in the MCU really has a secret identity. After Natasha dumped all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files on the internet in Captain America: The Winter Soldier everyone kind of knows who all of the heroes are. There are a few exceptions but, in general, the MCU puts a lot less emphasis on the secret identity than the DCEU or the comics.

Cinema Blend also talked to Tomei about the scene during the junket and what she thought of the dynamic change.

By the time [the script] got to me, that scene was already in place. And it was a set up for whatever is to come. It takes a big burden off of the character, too. You don't have to do the same thing over and over again, so he and I can have a different kind of relationship going forward, also. … That will come in the next installation, if I'm lucky and it happens. But I think it will. I hope. I think that will free up having the same kind of, 'I wonder what he's doing? He looks suspicious!' [Laughs] There are only so many ways I can skin that cat.

This will certainly make this version of Spider-Man very different from his other movie counterparts. Holland and Tomei have a great back and forth and if Peter doesn't need to hide anything from her then there are more opportunities for them to interact. That is something to look forward to.

Summary: Following the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), Peter Parker attempts to balance his life in high school with his career as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Michael Keaton. Swing on down to your local theater and check it out now.
