What If A Gay Superhero Kissed His Boyfriend And No One Cared?
It's been argued that the most important portrayal of homosexuality in comic books is when it isn't a mater of comment. It just is. Could this be a turning point?
When reading Teen Titans #29, we said this,
Hmm… all this heterosexuality. You realise a Bunker kiss must be on the cards now, right?
One issue later in Teen Titans #30. We got our wish. Bunker and his boyfriend.
We didn't say anything at the time. And neither, it seemed, did anyone else. Reviews may have said,
And the one with Bunker and Beast Boy was almost interesting, but then Lobdell had to just go and ruin it with his love of random, pointless super-villains! Gah! Was it too much to ask to just read about Bunker and his boyfriend or Bunker and Beast Boy hanging out at a party? Was that too difficult to write?!
And,
We get to see Beast Boy and Bunker's time in Mexico when they went to see Bunker's boyfriend after he awoke from his coma. So the lovers are happy, the town is happy, everyone is happy. Except for killjoy Beast Boy who's jealous about how happy Bunker is. But don't worry we won't have to feel feelings for very long because the heroes have to make there way back to New York once the TVs start reporting the death of the Justice League.
But one man kissing another, once enough to get banned by DC, is now not even worthy of comment by the blogosphere.
It just is.
Isn't that nice?
