Jack Black may have two different films based on games coming out, but there's a different video game series he would love to see made and star in. Black is no stranger to video game adaptations, as he's already got Minecraft and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. under his belt (along with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie coming out today), and soon to be three films based on a fictional board game, as a third Jumanji movie is planned for the holidays. But there's one franchise that he would love to be a part of: Yakuza.
Jack Black Looks To Add Yakuza To His Filmography
Speaking to ScreenRant in a recent interview to help promote The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Black put his wishes out there for a Yakuza film, saying, "So I'm going to throw my hat in that ring. I don't know if there [are] any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. SEGA, give me a jingle."
The tale of getting a proper Yakuza film to the big screen has been a rocky one. First and foremost, the subject matter and tone of the video games have always presented themselves as a challenge to replicate. There's been a TV adaptation of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon, which lasted only a season and received mixed reviews. Plus, the fact that there have been attempts to make a movie since 2020. The most recent effort actually took place this month, as Yakuza Powered by Nihon Touitsu released three episodes on YouTube, following a writing style more in line with that of developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
