Fox Orders Retirement Community Comedy 'Cool Kids' From 'It's Always Sunny' Trio
Looks like the boys from Paddy's Pub are going to start spending a little time outside of the bar. Fox has given a pilot green light to Cool Kids, a new comedy series from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia masterminds Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton.
Day and Paul Fruchbom (Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television) have been tapped to write the pilot, with comedy writer/producer Kevin Abbott (My Name Is Earl, Last Man Standing) set as series showrunner.
When it comes to Cool Kids, think of high school movies like Mean Girls and Heathers — and then add about 55 years. Three guys enjoy being the old-school "mac-daddies" of their retirement community…until a new and uniquely rebellious female retiree arrives to upset their cliquey comfort.
Cool Kids represents two recent initiatives from Fox regarding their programming commitments: an increase in pilot orders and development during off-cycles, and a push for more multi-camera comedies. After three seasons without a multi-camera comedy series, the network recently gave a pilot order for school comedy Suspended and a script commitment to live interactive comedy Immediate Family.
The announcement further calls into question the long-term future for FX's It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which just celebrated its 12th year on the air. On the show, his character Dennis decided to move to North Dakota to be a father…but that can always be quickly fixed. What's more concerning is that Howerton's pilot for AP Bio was picked up by NBC for a series commitment, stretching his creative time a little thin.
With all of that in play, Day can't imagine the show moving forward without Howerton:
"We really never want to do the show without Dennis. There is a possibility that maybe we would have Dennis in part of a season, not a complete season. I think we would still do a great season. There is a possibility that we have Dennis for an entire season, which would be fantastic."
The Cool Kids pilot is being executive produced by Day, McElhenney, Howerton, Abbott, and Nick Frenkel; with Fruchbom co-executive producing.
