'Animal Kingdom' Season 4: Grant Harvey, Jon Beavers Join TNT Crime Drama Series
Looks like Smurf's (Ellen Barkin) little crime "family" is about to expand by two… or are we taking a trip back in time to Smurf's more care-free criminal past? We'll find out that answer – and more – when Jon Beavers (The Long Road Home) and Grant Harvey (The Crossing) join the cast of Animal Kingdom, TNT's summer thrill ride/heir apparent to Sons of Anarchy that's getting itself ready for a season 4 return.
Here's a look at the most recent teaser, as well as a general overview of the series:
Animal Kingdom is an adrenaline-charged drama starring Emmy and Tony winner Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love, This Boy's Life, Oceans 13) as the matriarch of a Southern California family whose excessive lifestyle is fueled by their criminal activities, with Scott Speedman (The Strangers, The Vow) as her second in command. Shawn Hatosy (Southland, Reckless), Ben Robson (Vikings, Dracula: The Dark Prince), Jake Weary (Pretty Little Liars, It Follows) and Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, An Inspector Calls) also star.
Beavers' Jake is a good-natured career criminal with a laid back demeanor, while Harvey's Colin is a violent and emotionally damaged vet. Both are part of a crew that lives off the grid and hits marks all over the California coast.
Sounds kinda hippie, if you ask me. I wonder if they live out of a van… and how it factors into this:
In January, it was announced Leila George (Mortal Engines) was joining the series in a recurring role for the fourth season. George's Janine is a street savvy, scrappy survivor – a nihilist who doesn't expect to live past 30. She runs with a small crew of men a few years older than her: vets and surfers who steal to support their vagabond life on the road. She realizes very quickly that they are the ones who should be proving themselves to her.
Sound like a character we know and love/hate?
Given this information, it sounds like George is playing a younger version of Smurf. That crew of "vets and surfers supporting their vagabond life" does sound very hippie – and if we're seeing Smurf as a young 20-something, that would put it in the 70s.
Now we're full circle, coming back to the casting of Beavers and Harvey – I figure they are part of the crew Smurf ran with back in the day. Could this be a confirmation of a Smurf origin story? After the storyline was touched upon briefly last season, it sounds like the 70s criminal underground scene was pretty wild – especially that crew – so hopefully we'll see some colorful characters this season.
