Doctor Who: Is Millie Gibson Signaling She's Done After Series 2?

Did Millie Gibson signal that her run as Rudy Sunday on Doctor Who will wrap up after two series or are we reading too much into things?

You know how it goes. As geeks, we can only have so much of a good thing before we start getting paranoid about when (not if) that "inevitable" hammer will fall. Sometimes, that includes trying to read into what the stars of our favorite shows have to say when they give interviews – as was the case with an interview that Doctor Who star Millie Gibson did with Luxury London Living Fabric. In the profile piece, Gibson discusses what it was like auditioning for the role of companion Ruby Sunday and what it was like working with co-star Ncuti Gatwa (Fifteenth Doctor), showrunner Russell T. Davies, and the team behind the long-running series. But while the entire piece is definitely worth a read, there were a few comments toward the end that left us wondering if Gibson's run as Ruby will end up topping out at two series.

"It was so much fun! I think there were days where we got used to the madness of the job, and then when other people came in to do scenes with us, they were like, 'Oh wow, this is your job; this is what you do every day!' And we were like, 'Oh my God, I know!' It was just the most fun, and yeah, we really had a crazy time. And the team was wonderful… honestly, from the make-up department, props department, costume, everyone… I could go on for hours listing; they were the most supportive, kind people. And in a heartbeat, I would work with them all again," Gibson shared, explaining what her experience was like working on the show. And yet, there was that sense of finality to it all at the end.

Later, Gibson shares her thoughts on what the new year could hold for her – and it sounds like it's going to involve looking for new roles & new projects: "I think, now that the strike's over, probably auditioning again for parts and seeing what's out there." Normally, this would be an automatic red flag – but television & film productions are different these days. For example, RTD has been filming the next two series together (even sharing a tease for the 2024 Christmas Special), so that's going to leave a lot of open time – even taking into consideration the extra time Gibson & Gatwa will need to promote "Who" now that Disney is in play.

"Every year has seen such change for me; it's hard to think what might come next. I'd like to play a villain…" Gibson added near the end of the profile. "If not that, I think I'm really intrigued by biopic roles that you really need to research. I think that would be a great challenge. I don't know; I think I'm just excited to see what's to come." Again, are we concerned? A little bit – but because we also live in a post-Andrew Garfield world (we didn't forget that Spider-Man swerve) we need to keep all options on the table.
