Could Saga #43 Get Close To Outselling Walking Dead's Three Quarters Of A Million Copies?
Early this month, The Walking Dead #163 sold over three-quarters of a million copies, as a result of being twenty-five cents, to celebrate Image's twenty-fifth birthday. Much of this was helped by the 1:1000 and the 1:5000 variant copies that encourages stores to over order, at a price that made it worth doing.
We don't know if there are similar incentives for retailers regarding Saga #43, which in May will also be priced at 25 cents.
But some things to consider.
Despite not having a tie-in TV series (Vaughan and Staples have said that will never happen), Saga often outsells Walking Dead in collections in the charts and sometimes challenges it in singles.
The last issue from January ended on a massively emotional cliffhanger. There has been a break since, and no new stories until #43 in May. The collection up to #42 comes out in April. Everyone will be caught up.
Will the trade-waiters really miss out on what will answer their cliffhanger for a measly twenty-five cents? Could the sizeable wait-for-the-trade buyers join with the singles readers and swell demand even more?
Given Brian Vaughan and Fiona Staples' commercial nouse, will they make this as new-reader friendly as possible? Or do something so outrageous that people have to pick it up just to see?
Will this also make a great giveaway or impulse purchase for Free Comic Book Day, the Saturday after the comic comes out?
Will they top three-quarters of a million?
