What is FEMME MAGNIFIQUE?

FEMME MAGNIFIQUE is a graphic novel anthology that delivers short stories about women who have — and who are — changing the world. From pop music and politics to the arts and sciences, these inspirational tales are written and drawn by talented creators from the comic book industry and beyond. Edited and co-curated by Shelly Bond (former editor for Vertigo), and co-curated with Kristy Miller and me (Hi-Fi Colour Design) here's a sneak peek at some of the artwork and introductions to a few of the unique creative teams behind FEMME MAGNIFIQUE.

THE RIGHT STUFF

NASA began looking for female astronauts in 1977. Sally Ride was a student at the time. She saw an ad in the school newspaper and decided to apply for the job. She became one of six women chosen and was the first American woman launched into space.

MEET THE WRITER

CECIL CASTELLUCCI is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, The Year of the Beasts, Tin Star, and the Eisner-nominated Odd Duck.

In 2015 she co-authored Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure. She is currently writing Shade, The Changing Girl, an ongoing comic in ‪Gerard Way‬'s Young Animal imprint at DC Comics. And her newest Graphic Novel Soupy Leaves Home comes out in April. Her short stories and short comics have been published in Strange Horizons, Tor.com, Womanthology, Star Trek: Waypoint and Vertigo SFX: Slam! Cecil is the Children's Correspondence Coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time MacDowell Fellow and the founding YA Editor at the LA Review of Books.

MEET THE WRITER & ARTIST

TESS FOWLER is a self-taught comic book artist hailing from Los Angeles, California. She lives with her husband Chris and their fiendish hellcat, Sam.

Tess is a contributing artist on Wonder Woman '77 for DC Comics. Her other credits include cover work and interiors for Image, IDW, Oni and Black Mask. You can also find her work in such spots as album/video art for ‪Lisa Loeb‬, art extras on the Game of Thrones Season 3 blu-ray and many others.

SOMETHING SO PURE

Misty Copeland is an American ballet dancer for American Ballet Theatre (ABT), one of the three leading classical ballet companies in the United States. On June 30, 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in ABT's 75-year history. She was also named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time.

MEET THE WRITER

LAUREN MOYER, a 2016 graduate of Exeter Senior High School in Berks County, Pennsylvania, is now studying Speech-Language Pathology at Duquesne University and dancing with Pittsburgh's Exhalations Dance Theatre. Lauren trained pre-professionally with Berk's Ballet Theatre, taking ballet and modern classes since the age of three with Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance, at the Goggle Works in Reading, PA. Lauren also trained with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet in the summer of 2014 and American Ballet Theatre in the summer of 2015. Besides ballet, Lauren's other passions include eating chocolate, exploring her favorite cities, New York City and Pittsburgh, and shopping.

MEET THE ARTIST

PAULINA GANUCHEAU is a comic book artist and illustrator located on the East Coast. She is the co-creator of Zodiac Starforce. Her artwork has been featured on covers for IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios, and she contributed to the Adventure Time: Pixel Princesses graphic novel. Her hobbies include watching pro wrestling, cloud photography and following cats on instagram.

MEDAL OF FREEDOM

Shirley Chisholm became the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968. In 1972, she became the first black candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

RORI! is a designer and illustrator from St. Louis. She is the author of several comics, including the magical-autobiographical Tiny Pink Robots, and is the creator of the women's history illustration series #100Days100Women. She has been involved with a number of organizations focused on supporting and spotlighting women in the arts, and she is the founder of the comics-centered group Madames des Comiques. Today, she is developing a series of projects centered around adventurous and influential women in both fiction and history.
