What a Coincidence – a Miles Morales Spider-Man #1 Review

This week sees the launch of the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse movie, featuring Miles Morales as Spider-Man. By a staggeringly huge coincidence, tomorrow also sees a new Miles Morales: Spider-Man comic book launch.

But then Spider-Man has always enjoyed the largest of coincidences. His greatest nemesis, Green Goblin being Norman Osborn, his best friend's father? Or that Flash Thompson, schoolyard bully, would take on Venom, Spider-Man's second greatest nemesis.

Well it seems that this trait has been passed along to Miles Morales. Not only is his dad former SHIELD agent, just like Peter Parker's parents were both secret agents, with Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 anyone who surrounds his life has the potential to become a superhero or villain and coincidentally he has to deal with it. Maybe that's just New York, everyone knows at least one person in their life being used by a supervillain for their nefarious deeds.

Oh and that also means bumping into Peter Parker's usual rogues gallery, like The Rhino. Look, it's the streets of New York, you're going to bump into people. And in the Rhino's case, that's very literal indeed.

The biggest problem this comic book has, is that it's up against Spectacular and Amazing at high points. And as a result, this rather ordinary Spider-Man story doesn't stick out, which is perhaps unfair. Saladin Ahmed gives us something that's a little more Dan Slott than it is Brian Bendis, though it maintains a motormouth. And it is impossible to deny that Javi Garron is pleasing on the eye. And it may be that Into The Spider-Verse gives this title a little more something.

But for now, this is an 'eh maybe' of a book. More to come though, I'm sure… let's see how the big coincidence plays out.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 is published tomorrow.
