While director David Ayer might have said on social media earlier this week that he was done trying to get his version of Suicide Squad made, that didn't stop people from bringing it up in interviews that were done before he made that definitive-ish statement. Ayer and his push for his version of Suicide Squad has been an on-and-off battle that he and a small group of dedicated fans have been fighting for years alongside Zack Snyder and his group of fans. Ayer's version of the film, which we could likely say is closer to the Comic-Con teaser [a leak that wasn't supposed to be released publicly as a reminder] than the other trailers we got, is another example of a studio trying to course-correct something they thought was "wrong" mid-production with a script that was written in six weeks. It was a recipe for disaster, and Ayer very much appears to be done fighting what he feels is a losing battle, as he explained to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Yeah. Look, I can take the hint," Ayer said when asked how he was once optimistic but now seems more inclined to let bygones be bygones. "It's been radio silent, and I'm done pushing a rock uphill. I love directing; I love my job; I love working with actors. There are great places and great partners out there to work with, and I just want to focus on being a great partner and making some good movies."
David Ayer Says His Cut Of Suicide Squad Is "Great"
That first teaser of Suicide Squad is very promising, but how good was the actual movie? Ayer claims that anyone who has seen this film says it is "one of the best comic book movies ever made." However, he also pushes back and debunks the narrative that anyone involved with the Suicide Squad situation acted maliciously or like they were deliberately trying to make the film fail. At the end of the day, they all wanted the movie to succeed with mainstream audiences, but Ayer and the previous leadership at Warner Bros. had different ideas of approaching that.
"The studio has gone through several iterations of leadership, and nobody involved ever had any malice or ill will or anything," Ayer explained when complimented on how well he handled himself on a press tour for a film that was essentially stolen from him. "Everyone just wanted the same result, which was a great commercial movie. There was just a big delta on what that was. The thing that's been difficult for me is that I made a great film. I made a great film. The people who have seen my cut have pretty much unanimously said that it's one of the best comic book movies ever made. If someone who's seen the cut wants to dispute that, then they can come talk to me. I was pilloried, pilloried, in the media again and again over it, and then pilloried again and again in the press launch of subsequent IPs, but I kept my mouth shut for years. I learned that nature abhors a vacuum, and if you don't tell your story, then somebody else will. It's incredibly unjust, and I can't point to a similar situation, ever. It's mind-blowing. It's a scar, it's a wound, and it's taken a lot out of me. It also took a lot of equity out of my career, unfairly."
It's always a shame when a movie is taken away from a director and the creative vision is changed by people who have no idea what they are doing and are making it for the worse. However, time and time, we have seen that the online movement behind Snyder is not nearly as big as everyone thinks it is. Whether that proves that the SnyderCut movement was primarily driven by bots or the mediocre numbers following Rebel Moon. The momentum behind Ayer and Suicide Squad is even smaller. From a pure business angle, it makes sense that releasing Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad would only lead to diminishing returns. It's clear that DC Studios is ready to move on now that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sank like a stone. Hopefully, Ayer can move on, and people can stop poking at this old wound to try and get fresh blood. Ayer has so much potential as a director, and we saw that with Fury. It's time to let this messy era of DC go for the betterment of everyone involved.
The Beekeeper: Summary, Cast List, Release Date
Bees are timeless. Mankind's relationship with bees started before the birth of civilization, and bee iconography goes back thousands of years and exists in every part of the world. There are rock paintings in Spain over 8000 years old of a woman harvesting honey, and vials of edible honey were discovered in the pyramids of Egypt. Equally timeless is the cruel exploitation of the weak and vulnerable by the ruthless and indifferent, and just as timeless is the need for a white knight, a warrior for justice, a hero to protect society, the way a beekeeper protects his hive.
The rise of beekeeping over 10,000 years ago parallels the rise of civilization. It's simple. No bees, no agriculture. No agriculture, no civilization. Bees are essential to life, and beekeepers are essential to bees. In the way that a queen, drone, or worker bee co-exist and thrive in a well-maintained hive, so do people thrive in a lawful and just society. But when a system is thrown out of order by corruption and greed, you need The Beekeeper.
