[RUMOR] Adi Shankar in Talks for 'Legend of Zelda' TV Series
The Wrap is reporting that one of the producers from Netflix's Castlevania series, Adi Shankar, is in talks with Nintendo for a TV Series based on The Legend of Zelda. Shankar first teased the announcement on his Instagram by saying he was "working with an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video games series into a series." While we aren't going to touch the obvious redundancy of several words in that statement, the obvious takeaway was that Shankar is working with Nintendo on an adaptation of one of their games. Which could be interesting.
Or, like Castlevania, could be a bit underwhelming.
According to The Wrap:
Producer Adi Shankar is in talks to produce a series based on the long-running "The Legend of Zelda" video game franchise, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
On Monday, Shankar posted on Instagram that he was "working with an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series."
Shankar's most recent credits include serving as a producer on Joseph Kahn's "Bodied" and starring in "Get the Girl," as well as executive producer in "Lone Survivor." He also served as executive producer on the TV series "Castlevania."
Created for Nintendo by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, "The Legend of Zelda" debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986. Followed by more than 17 sequels and several remastered release, the "Zelda" franchise has sold more than 80 million copies worldwide.
In most incarnations, the series follows the adventures of a wandering hero named Link, who must collect magical artifacts to save the princess Zelda and defeat an evil wizard named Ganon.
When reached for comment, a Nintendo spokesperson said, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."
Despite the fact that Shankar would be a primary source of information on the existince of a Zelda tv series, we do find ourselves a tiny bit skeptical of the news looking over his history of such announcements. Shankar has previously announced that he was working on an Assassin's Creed TV Show and a dark Metroid series, both of which have yet to be confirmed. He also claimed to be working on the DREDD sequel, which was quickly shot down by 2000 AD co-owner Jason Kingsley. And when I got on the phone with Shankar to talk about the then-recently-announced Castlevania series, he spent a half hour dodging our questions and talking about pro wrestling. Which is fine, we do cover pro wrestling here on Bleeding Cool, but the purpose of the interview was Castlevania, which he remained reticent about.
All of this is not to say that Shankar isn't talking to Nintendo about a Zelda series, however, we know that being in-talks for a tv show is a far cry from a confirmation of its existence.
So, for now, we're classing this one as a rumor to be safe.
