The Female Heroes Issue Of Bleeding Cool Magazine Arrives This Week And We're Really Proud Of It
We here at Bleeding Cool are particularly pleased to remind people that something we're very proud of is reaching shops this week on Wednesday, February 25th, the Female Heroes Issue of Bleeding Cool Magazine, issue #15. Bleeding Cool Magazine, currently clocking in at 104 pages of original print-only content every 2 months, but jumping to 124 pages in length this coming summer, usually has a theme.
We've had a science-fiction issue, a horror issue, and most recently, an apocalypse issue with a special interview with Alan Moore on Crossed +100, but one of my goals when I took over the editorship of the magazine in Autumn of 2014 was to create an issue that focused on female comic creators and female characters in comics. I didn't achieve this goal alone, far from it.
Some of the people who have created this issue of the magazine, and made it something we are so proud of are Ariana Osbourne, our Art Director on the magazine, Rich Johnston who wrote several pieces for the issue, Dan Wickline, who was also a major contributor, Jim Kuhoric who both wrote for and helped assemble the magazine, and then our collaborating writers Michele Brittany, Geoffrey D. Wessel, Diana McCallum, Christine Marie, Abdulkareem Baba Aminu, and Joe Glass. The centerpiece of the issue is a long, quite open and conversational interview with the incredibly generous Gail Simone and we want to thank her for her help and her time.
So in what sense is this a "female heroes" issue?
Let me give you an idea of the content this month:
-A feature piece by Rich Johnston on the history of women in comics entitled "Where the Women At?"
-An interview and editorial on IDW's new series Orphan Black and the "exponential potential of female heroes" (Hannah Means-Shannon)
-An interview with Gail Simone on her life and work called "No More Sitting on the Bench" (Christine Marie)
-A history of the cinematic Wonder Woman and what we hope is coming up (Hilton Collins)
-A video game editorial on how much we need more female protagonists (Patrick Dane)
-An interview with the creative team on IDW's upcoming Jem series and why "sparkle" can still make a statement
-An interview with the female cover artists of Dynamite about their careers and work (Dan Wickline)
-A look at Lady Killer from Dark Horse in historical and gender context (Michele Brittany)
-An essay on Boom's new series Curb Stomp and the role of female team books (Diana McCallum)
-A discussion of the female heroes and villains of the Hellboy Universe and the B.P.R.D. (Hannah Means-Shannon)
-An editorial on the new Boom! series Cluster (Abdulkareem Baba Aminu)
-A round-up and critique of the female characters of the Valiant Universe (Geoffrey Wessel)
-A massive interview with female fans about their reactions to Zenescope depictions of women (Dan Wickline)
Plus our regular feature likes a Pull List of upcoming comics and a special Price Guide that features Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel and Harley Quinn as their comics soar in value.
There's a lot of meaningful content this month that we all put our hearts into, and we hope you'll not only check it out but enjoy this reminder and exploration of the role women have always played, and continue to play, in comics.
Plus it has a truly awesome Orphan Black cover that depicts not one female protagonist, but 6. Find out what I think of that in my article on the subject, included inside.
