Jay Garrick, The Flash, Gets A Brand New, Darker, Origin (Spoilers)

Jay Garrick, The Flash, first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in 1940, created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. Jay Garrick gained his speed-enhancing abilities by inhaling hard water vapour during a lab experiment which granted him superhuman speed and agility, allowing him to become the Flash and fight crime. But in tomorrow's Jay Garrick: The Flash #4, all that gets re-written. Or rather, the motivations of those involved do. This is originally how it played out.

And so it plays out, only this time it is revealed as an arranged plan by his Professor… later named Professor Hughes, with his own agenda.

The new Golden Age series has reframed Professor Hughes as Doctor Elemental, working for the Nazis, to create them a super soldier…

….and who repeatedly fought Jay Garrick's Flash, and his daughter Boom, until all memory of her was existed, along with Doctor Elemental.

Now those memories are returning. And Jay Garrick's memories of his origin as the Flash now get a little more detailed…

… with Professor Hughes, as an active participant in an experiment that created The Flash.

And so previously established and much loved scenes from eighty-four years ago, are reframed in this new light.

With Professor Hughes recast as a mad scientist, rather than a university lecturer and scientist, obsessed with creating superpowers.

With even the results of his experiments, positive beyond his wildest dreams…

…the language stays the same, but the resulting scenes are very different.

But also citing Jay Garrick's unique genetic profile as suitable for such an origin. While Hughes also had plans for Jay Garrick's daughter, giving her similar powers and origin of those abilities.

As well as bringing in Joan Garrick to his plans. But there is more…

And now revealed as the man behind S.T.A.R. Laboratories, rather than Garrison Slate, previously portrayed as the founder of the ubiquitous private scientific research body in the DC Comics universe. And creating STAR labs purely for his own research into metahumans and genetics. STAR Labs created by Nazi Gold? It's all change in the DC Universe…
