Marvel Makes a List of 20 Nicest TPBs for New Readers

Marvel has launched a new initiative to help retailers and librarians create a core offering of comics for new readers by placing them on a list with no other contextual information, a press release revealed Wednesday. Amongst the titles included are Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1: Gifted, Civil War, Thanos Rising, and Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther, though Marvel did not provide any reasoning for why these titles were chosen nor what said retailers and librarians should tell prospective new readers when trying to sell them on them.

Introducing MARVEL SELECT, your essential Marvel reading list – and the volumes that answer the often-repeated question about Marvel collected editions: "Where do I start!?"

A series of graphic novels hand-picked by Marvel Editorial to showcase pivotal storylines and written and drawn by some of Marvel's most acclaimed creators, MARVEL SELECT provides readers with a collection of entry points into the Marvel Universe. These stand-alone volumes, which also serve as evergreen adventures about Marvel's most well-known heroes, are perfect for retailers or librarians looking to create a core title offering for their readers!

Look, Marvel, here in the clickbait comics new business, if there's one thing we know, it's how to make a list. And making a list isn't just about listing things – there's no SEO value in that. You have to provide at least a paragraph of explanation for why those things that are listed are on the list! This is basic stuff!

Then again, perhaps Marvel knows more than they're letting on, as the list seems to be a tease for the Marvel Calendar, which might provide more information on the Marvel Select titles:
