Read the 1st Issue of La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo FREE as 2nd Issue Now on Kickstarter
Last year, we interviewed Henry Barajas about his then-upcoming comic, La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo, the story of Barajas's great-grandfather, World War 2 veteran Ramon Jaurigue, nicknamed Tata Rambo, and his struggles to manage his own family life while at the same time fighting for equal rights alongside the Pascua Yaqui tribe in Tuscon, Arizona and founding the the Mexican, American, Yaqui, and Others (M.A.Y.O.) organization. The Kickstarter for the first issue was fully funded, and now Barajas is back with artist J. Gonzo, letterer Bernardo Bryce, editor Claire Napier, and this time with Eva Cabrera providing the cover for La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo #2.
The comic is seeking $7,800 in Kickstarter funding, and it's more than halfway there with 17 days to go. La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo tells the story of Jaurigue and M.A.Y.O.'s successful fight to prevent the displacement of the Pascua Yaqui tribe from their lands, a story as relevant as ever today, but it's the struggle to hold his marriage and family together that provides the personal drama to this fictionalized account based on historical research and oral history. Aside from editor Claire Napier, all of the creators involved in the project are Latinx creators from the U.S, Mexico, or Chile, and the Kickstarter rewards include print copies (8 bucks), digital copies (6 bucks), pin badges, cover prints, backmatter and process-work access, shirts, an appearance in the book, original art, and even dinner with Henry Barajas himself, who, in addition to writing this comic, has a background as a journalist and stand-up comedian and works in comics at Top Cow Productions, one of the partner studios of Image Comics, which will also be publishing the three-issue series. So you can pick his brain about a variety of topics… or just stare at him while eats. Hey, you paid for it.
But okay, we hear you: "all of that is great and important, and I do like dinner, but will I like the comic?" Well, the team behind La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo is putting their money where their mouths are by offering the entire first issue to read for free to Bleeding Cool readers (that's you). If you like it, and you want to read issue #2 and support the production of the comic, then you can head over to Kickstarter and pledge at whatever level is comfortable to you. You can also pick up a digital or print copy of issue #1 via the Kickstarter as well.
