Booze Geek – Oatmeal Yeti Imperial Stout And Proof By Alexander Grecian And Riley Rossimo
By Dylan Gonzalez
Beer: Oatmeal Yeti Imperial Stout
Brewery: Great Divide Brewing Co.
I love my stouts, but sometimes I find it difficult to find a middle ground with them. Either they lack the character to really make them great or (despite their quality) are just really intense beers. However, Great Divide has provided me with quite a find in the Oatmeal Yeti Stout.
The Yeti was black in color, completely impossible to see through from one side to the other. It created a thick, long lasting mocha colored head. Raising the glass to my nose, I detected scents of dried dark fruit, which were likely the raisins that the beer is brewed with. I also noticed hops, malt, chocolate and coffee.
When I drank it, I was really surprised by the balance of the Yeti. Despite it being a thick bodied, it did not assault my palate like some others have. There definitely a strong mix of malt, coffee and chocolate and just a hint of alcohol with a light oat flavor. But all these flavors and qualities came together to make a rather drinkable stout. Overall, this was a great beer that went down smoothly and had lots of fantastic taste.
What To Drink This To:
I realize that I am cheating a little when I suggest a book about Sasquatch and there is a beer by Sierra Nevada called Bigfoot, but I missed it and nobody's perfect. Anyway, I would recommend Alexander Grecian and Riley Rossimo's very cool comic series Proof from Image Comics. A sort of Hellboy-inspired series about the adventures of a very proper Big Foot character named Proof and his newly recruited sidekick, it features a real tour de force of artwork from Rossimo. So let the Yeti Stout breath as you dive into Proof and then enjoy from there.
