Monday Jitters, Twitters And Teachers

Three days till I fly out to Wizard World Big Apple Comic Con (look everyone, they put the Wizard World name back in, albeit in smaller type!) and I haven't even started preparing. I don't even know what hotel I'm meant to be staying in. This will be fun.. Central Park is warm this time of year, right? Either way, I'm in training, the Bleeding Cool panel is scheduled opposite the Twilight panel. It's tough to go up against but I'm ready. I'm ready!!!

Here's uploaded video of Kevin Smith on BBC's Newsnight Review, for those of you who live outside the UK and can't access the iPlayer. There are some real gems…

Kevin talked about this at recording at his Audience show at Indig02 this weekend, lambasting Jeanette Winterson in the process. He also had a go at Jonathan Ross, much beloved of Bleeding Cool. Now back in 2006, in his Film 2006 show, Jonathan Ross reviewed Clerks II, saying of its writer/director/editor/actor Kevin Smith;

It's a real tribute to the man's shrewd use of the Internet to keep his profile alive, that he has managed to sustain a career in the movie industry. As he has no detectable talent as writer, director, editor, or actor.

At the time, Kevin Smith posted opposing reviews and comments from some of the Hollywood luminati to contradict Ross. But regarding his trip to the UK, Kevin Smith's people enquired if Jonathan Ross wanted him on his BBC Friday night chat show, only to be rebuffed. One Twitterer took it in hand to ask Jonathan directly to get the response

Wasn't I didn't want him on, per se. But majority of people in UK have no idea who he is. And we rarely have directors on .

And when that wasn't enough;

Trust me. Majority of people in UK have never heard of him. This isn't a dis, just a fact. Hasn't been involved in a major hit.

Which is probably true, but not enough of an answer for said twitterer who promptly unfollowed Jonathan, leaving him with only 424,964 remaining. And so, at his recent An Audience With Kevin Smith show as part of Indig02 at the O2 complex in London appearance, Smith took took Ross to task. We await quotes with glee, but there is irony in that the Kick Ass movie that Kevin Smith saw and talked about on BBC Newsnight Review, was scripted by Jonathan Ross' wife, Jane Goldman.

There are wheels within whels within hamster wheels.

teacherDoes your teacher ever dress up as the Joker, or is it just a makeup job gone wrong? All cheers to Mr Walenta of the Driffield School in Driffield, East Yorkshire, as a school took on a comics theme day, and ComICA's Paul Gravett and Mel Gibson (no not that one) turned up to talk to children about comics, comics illustration and how the whole thing works.

While the Dubai School of Government is to host Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, creator of The 99, the Islamic-themed superhero comic, for a speech on how the private sector can help diplomacy from country to country, citing The 99 as an example of that, epitomised by an upcoming Batman/Superman/99 crossover.

And Wimpy Kid creator Jeff Kinney gets some local press. As if he needs it…

it's nice there's room in the world for vampires and wimpy kids.

Hope there's room for a comics gossip blog and vampires as well…
