Thursday Morning Runaround – Introducing Wolverine

wolverine_auction_artCLAWS FOR CONCERN

The original art for the first appearance of Wolverine, by Herb Trimpe, has been found and will be auctioned. Given as a gift to a visiting fan back in 1983, a six figure sum is expected when this goes to auction. Money from the sale will go to benefit the HERO charity.

The owner, who asked not to be identified, received the art as a gift from Trimpe after he and his family had visited. A comic collector, he brought some issues drawn by Trimpe, hoping for an autograph. Trimpe obliged. As they left, the artist told him to wait.

"He ran back upstairs to his studio, and he came with this page of artwork in his hands," Hignite said of ink, graphite and blue drawing. On it was inscribed "Ben — Best Wishes Herb Trimpe."

HOW SMALL ARE YOUR COMICS?

Nola looks at some very small, very free, comic books.

Caesar Meadows is a big dude, but he produces the tiniest comic books you ever saw. They are about as big a book of matches, so small that they fit in one of those plastic capsules that come from the toy vending machines you see at grocery store exits. Meadows has been busy. For Carnival 2014, the Krewe of Muses commissioned Meadows to make 30,840 mini comic books to be tossed from their floats on Thursday (Feb, 27) night. Thirty thousand, eight hundred and forty!

Meadows figures that it took 63 hours to cut, staple, fold and encapsulate the mini comic edition. He invented a special device he calls the "Stealth Bagger 24" to funnel the throws into bags. On Thursday night, roughly one out of eight Crescent Cityites could catch a Caesar Meadows comic book, the content of which will remain a secret until then. It would have been impossible, Meadows said, without a little help from his friends.

BOOM TROUBLE

Boom looks like they are going to publish a Big Trouble In Little China licensed comic book… with at least a cover from Goon creator Eric Powell.

Marvel-Cover-2014_0FROM IRON LUNGS TO IRON MAN

An Iron Man limited edition comic created by Marvel specifically for children in the hospital care system will be added to Disney hospital care packages sent to hospitals around the world. The message is that we all have super powers within us that we draw upon to get us through difficult times. Although, you know, doctors help too. Marvel's Bill Rosemann is quoted by the Walt Disney blog saying,

"We hope every comic book we publish entertains the reader and takes them away from their worries… but when we can do that and also create a story that helps children during their stay in a hospital? Now that's unique! We wanted to let kids and their families know that everyone at Marvel and Disney is on their side—that we recognize the immense challenges they are facing, and that they have the strength within to face those challenges. We may create comics and movies starring super heroes, but they are our true heroes."

FACE FIRST, TRUE BELIEVER!

Corey Blake looks as the First Second blog and website as a modern day Marvel Bullpen.

It's the same thing Stan Lee was doing in the '60s with his Bullpen Bulletins. By creating a colorful cast of characters and talking directly to Marvel's readers, Stan Lee helped build a loyalty to himself, to Marvel Comics, and to their characters. Gina is doing the same thing for First Second in her own style and voice.

COMICS GIVE YOU A BONNER

Nathan Bonner of the Indavo and Shamus Stone comics will be heading up the Saturday Social at the the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

There will be a discussion on the creative process involved in developing a comic series from scratch followed by a drawing workshop. A number of comic-book artists will be on hand to assist and share differing viewpoints.

According to the Arts Council, all drawing materials will be provided to participants including Cape Comic Con Artboards. Completed Artboards can be used as a free ticket for the 2014 Cape Comic Con for children age 12 and younger.

Thanks to assistance from Macey Lavoie.
