"Up Yours Angoulême!" – The Cry From 100 Women Making Comics As The New London Exhibition Opens
Last night saw the opening of Comix Creatix – 100 Women Making Comics, a new exhibition at the King's Cross House Of Illustration.
The great and the good of the London comics community were there to celebrate the work – and they let me in as well, for some reason. The timing, of course, couldn't be better as the Angoulême festival stated a paucity of female comic book creators to recognise, especially for a lifetime achievement award, this exhibition puts the lie to that.
The work on display is massive, celebrating 100 female comic book creators, everyone from Marie Duval to Tove Jansson, Posy Simmonds to Audrey Niffenegger, Nina Bunjevac to Fish, Emma Vieceli to Carol Swain and displayed in an exquisite and thoroughly thought through fashion, including video spaces, published work and original artwork.
And last night many of the artists (above) were there, to see their work in this fashion, with the cry "Up Yours Angoulême!". Well, the champagne to celebrate it all, had flowed freely Here's a look at some – but no means all – the work on display, and the people who were there to enjoy it all.
As a result of the show, the Laydeez Do Comics meetings have been reconvened there. The next will be held on the 15th February.
The show itself runs until the 15th May.
