Yes, Chicago, Andrew Aydin Will Speak At The New Trier High School's Civil Rights Day After All

It looks like Andrew Aydin, co-author of the March graphic novel trilogy with John Lewis and Nate Powell, will be speaking at New Trier High School's Civil Rights Day after all.

Some parents of children at the northern Chicago school had complained that an all-day seminar on civil rights was lacking in conservative voices and was  "biased, unbalanced, divisive." Aydin was just one of the authors scheduled to speak there next Tuesday.

The school holds an annual seminar day each year, and this year's was "Understanding Today's Struggle for Racial Civil Rights." Aydin and Colson Whitehead, author of The Underground Railroad will give keynote speeches, followed by workshops that the pupils can choose to take part in.

However, pressure group called Parents of New Trier says it will just "reinforce racial stereotypes and resentment," and was demanding more conservative voices, or for the day to be cancelled.

So, earlier this week, appropriately enough, they had a debate about the issues, with 700 parents attending and 100 registering to speak. With overwhelming support for the seminars, the board chose to go ahead as planned.
