The early reactions to Mother Mary have started dropping, and they are trending pretty damn positive. It's one of those movies where the trailer and teasers have really been selling a specific vibe more than story points, but when your movie is also, in part, a concert film, that makes sense. A concert is experienced differently from narrative storytelling, and even concert films are presented in ways that differ from those of a narrative film. When you hear that the director, Mother Mary David Lowery, drew inspiration from a Taylor Swift concert film, everyone is probably going to assume it's The Eras Tour, but that is not the case. As Lowery explained to Empire, it was the 2018 concert film for the Reputation tour that really helped the team figure out how they wanted to present Mary's performances.

"Her Reputation concert film is one of the best concert films ever. It's truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences, we looked at that repeatedly," Lowerty explained. "You would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor. … We took three songs from Reputation and broke it down, shot by shot, and looked at them like, 'Okay, if we were doing these, how much would these shots cost to do in visual effects?'," he explains. "We used that as a budgeting tool, because we didn't know how to wrap our heads around actually pulling off a stadium concert-show on a minimal budget. We were literally using Reputation as a guide. I can go on about Reputation all day."

Swift was present in smaller ways as well, as Lowery revealed that, "When we wrapped, Annie [Hathaway] gave me a Taylor Swift style beaded bracelet with 'Anti-Hero' on it." The popstar is baked into the DNA of who the character of Mary is, with Lowery explaining that he "definitely brought a lot of Taylor Swift to the table in terms of who Mother Mary was. I would often would be like, 'Imagine Taylor Swift in ten or 15 years – that's sort of who this character could be.'" It seems like things are not going well for Mary in Mother Mary, so we can hope the trajectory isn't entirely accurate.
