Supergirl Director Craig Gillespie On Kara And Clark's Dynamic

Supergirl director Craig Gillespie says that while Kara and Clark might be cousins, "you get this almost older-sibling dynamic and that can be adversarial at times."

Article Summary

  • Supergirl director Craig Gillespie shares new insights on the dynamic between Kara Zor-El and cousin Superman.
  • Kara and Clark have different upbringings, creating an almost older-sibling and sometimes adversarial relationship.
  • The latest Supergirl trailer highlights their contrast and showcases Kara's struggle to find her place.
  • Gillespie emphasizes relatable family tension, making DC's god-like characters feel grounded and authentic.

The new Supergirl trailer has given us a much better idea of what the overall plot of this film is going to be: "time to save the goodest boy in the DC universe," and, should the worst happen, "what if John Wick had even more god-like power?" Kara's story clearly isn't taking place on Earth, but we did see footage of her cousin, Clark, as he spoke to her about how she wouldn't find "her stride" if she didn't spend time among humans. Kara doesn't seem very interested in joining her cousin, and their very different views of the world are a big factor. The two of them did not have the same childhood, and as director Craig Gillespie explained to Entertainment Weekly, it has shaped them in very different ways.

"They have such different upbringings," Gillespie explained. "Superman hasn't gone through trauma. He came from a very loving family and was almost groomed to be in this role, whereas Supergirl has been through trauma and the role's kind of being pushed upon her at a later age, and she's having to adjust to that."

We got to see a little bit of their dynamic when Kara made a brief appearance at the end of Superman to pick up her dog. Gillespie describes it as, "Even though they're cousins, you get this almost older-sibling dynamic, and that can be adversarial at times. He's the gentle guy that wants to reach out and be patient, and she's having to find a way and find herself."

The older/younger thing has always been present in Clent and Kara's dynamic since Supergirl's inception, but the adversarial part wasn't. It means the dynamic will feel much more real and even relatable, which is something DC heroes can sometimes lack. DC likes to present its characters as gods, but no one can really relate to being one. Having a relationship with an older relative where your dynamic is more than a little antagonist and you're willing to literally go to the ends of the universe for your dog? Yep, sounds relatable to me.
