Supergirl: Kara Is Not Trying To Save The World, Just Her Own World

Supergirl star Milly Alcock explains that Kara is "not trying to save the world - she's just trying to save her own."

Article Summary

  • Supergirl star Milly Alcock explains Kara's journey is about saving her own world, not the world at large.
  • The official Supergirl trailer reveals the central mission: rescuing Krypto, the DC Universe's legendary dog.
  • Alcock describes Kara's struggles with responsibility and self-discovery, making the character deeply relatable.
  • The film explores personal heroism, showing even super-powered characters face very human emotional battles.

The official trailer for Supergirl dropped, and now we know what the movie is going to be about: saving the goodest boy in the DC Universe, Krypto. It's a concept anyone with a heart can get behind, because who hasn't had a beloved pet they would do literally anything to save? It's a shockingly relatable throughline for a character that is extremely powerful with very few weaknesses. DC often turns its characters into gods, but that isn't the case here; this is a dog-saving mission by way of superheroes, and we're so in. Star Milly Alcock spoke to Vanity Fair, and she explained it even better.

"She's not trying to save the world—she's just trying to save her own," says Alcock. "This film is an excellent reminder that the world can be crumbling around you, but you can be the hero of your own story."

Her own world, also known as her beloved pet. It's also very relatable for anyone who has gone into a very dark place in their life; there are moments when the only thing that will get you out of bed is knowing your dog needs to go out or the cat needs to be fed. Alcock went on to describe it as Kara being "given this incredible responsibility and doesn't know how to deal with it. So she kind of suffocates herself and goes on a journey of self-discovery."

As noted in the article, once production on Supergirl wrapped, Alcock realized she was mirroring her character much more than she had realized. "That's me, man. I'm the mess. … I'm not the mess anymore." We'd all like to be less of a mess, and we all need a Very Good Dog to help us along the way.
