Arrow Season 6: Colin Donnell Talks About Returning as Tommy Merlyn
Actor Colin Donnell played Tommy Merlyn on the first season of Arrow, with his character dying as fallout form his father's evil machinations. His death sent Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) down the path of being more than a killer checking names off a list, but growing into being a hero. He made a couple poignant return moments in flashbacks or hallucinations, but with the actor moving over to start in Chicago Med, he didn't appear at all in seasons 4 or 5. But to the delight of many fans, he popped up in the Crisis on Earth-X crossover and is said to be appearing in episode 21 of this season.
Donnell talked with TVLine about his return to Arrow and pointed out an interview he had done a few years back saying he'd like to play an evil version of Tommy, which is basically what he did in the crossover.
It was so fun. It's always a pleasure to be able to go back and see everybody up in Vancouver, and to be a continued part of that show. Doing the Earth-X version of Tommy was a blast. It was fun to be a part of that giant crossover. It was so quick. I literally flew in for just one day, and then I flew out and that was it. It's always fun to see the response from the fans, and see everybody excited about Tommy popping back up again.
And about the scene itself:
We had a great time. I loved being on set with Stephen [Amell]. To be able to be directed by James Bamford… when we started the show, he was the fight coordinator, and now he's a producer and a director, and it's just awesome. I'm so happy for those guys. And they just got picked for a Season 7, which is all the more cool.
And they had to ask about his upcoming appearance:
Yes, he did. And yes, I will be. And that's pretty much all I can say about it. [Laughs]
Arrow airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on the CW. The 21st episode should air on May 3rd.
