Doctor Who Star David Tennant Tapped to Host 2024 BAFTA Awards
David Tennant is hosting the 2024 BAFTA Awards in London on February 24th, which will probably send the award show's ratings sky-high.
David Tennant's time on Doctor Who may be over (at least for now), but he's not going away. He's going to host the 2024 BAFTA Awards. That's the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards to you. Hear that explosion? It's from the future. It's the night of February 24th when the ratings for the BAFTA Awards explode sky-high. Tennant takes over from Saltburn actor Richard E. Grant, who hosted last year's edition, the first held at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in South London. Grant has the honor of having played not only the MCU's Loki from an alternate universe but also a previous alternate universe's Doctor in the neglected and badly animated audio drama Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka. You really can't escape Doctor Who in the British Film and Television industry.
Just in case you've been living in a nuclear bunker for the last twenty years, Tennant is best known for his acclaimed run as Doctor Who. His other prominent credits include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Good Omens, and Broadchurch. His stage credits include Much Ado About Nothing, Richard II, Hamlet, and, most recently, Macbeth. He is currently the busiest actor in the United Kingdom. But of course, he's not going to turn down hosting the BAFTA Awards! It's the British version of the Oscars, and the winning movies often go on to win the Oscars in Hollywood. And no, The Doctor is NOT holding a BAFTA Award in the picture above.
The longlists for all 24 BAFTA categories, including Best Film, Director, Cinematography, Casting, Documentary, and Film Not in the English Language, will be announced later today. The final nominations will be announced via live stream by former EE Rising Star Award nominees Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir on January 18. The EE Rising Star nominations will be announced on January 10. As far as we can tell, Ackie and Ben-Adir have not appeared on Doctor Who. Yet.
"I am delighted to have been asked to host the EE BAFTA Film Awards and help celebrate the very best of this year's films and the many brilliant people who bring them to life,' said Tennant. Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, added: "We are over the moon that David Tennant will be our host for the 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards. He is deservedly beloved by British and international audiences alike. His warmth, charm, and mischievous wit will make it a must-watch show next month for our guests at the Royal Festival Hall and the millions of people watching at home.
"The EE BAFTA Film Awards recognize exceptional films and the talented people who make them. More than 7500 of our BAFTA members – creatives from all corners of the British and global film industry – have been voting over the holidays, and we will be publishing their chosen longlists later today. We hope it will inspire people to watch more films and encourage everyone to join in the conversation on who should win a BAFTA next month."
The BAFTA Awards 2024 will be streamed live on February 24th on British television and also on Britbox abroad as well as BAFTA's official YouTube Channel. How many of you will watch the BAFTA Awards for the first time in your life just because your favourite Doctor is hosting it? You know you want to!
