Howard was recruited to fly for NASA, given his expertise as an engineer and his work in robotics, in season five. He officially made his space flight in the season finale "The Countdown Reflection," which took him to the International Space Station and returned in the season six premiere, "The Date Night Variable," with the next four episodes dedicated to his adventures in space. While there were productions that went above and beyond, sending actors up in planes for weightless scenes, like Apollo 13 (1995), CBS filmed Helberg's space-related scenes at its soundstage.
"I collected things that looked like what was in the actual space station. I watched the video of the station probably 20 times, trying to pick out all these different things, and there were so many surprises in the stuff you saw attached to the walls with Velcro so they wouldn't float around," series set decorator Ann Shea told collectSPACE. Howard's space flight would be one of the character's biggest accomplishments, alongside being the first among his friends at Cal Tech to start a family with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch). The Big Bang Theory, which ran for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019, is available to stream on HBO Max.
