The Return Of Rob Granito As The New Charlie Sheen

I have to admire the man's chutzpah. Last month, Bleeding Cool broke a series of stories about the activities of artist Rob Granito, misrepresenting his career to potential customers at comics conventions, inventing and exaggerating past credits in order to justify the sale of his artwork, much of which was swiped from othe, better known creators. The story boomed and it led to a confrontation between Ethan Van Sciver, Mark Waid and Rob Granito at the Megacon convention. Then Rob went dark.

Now he's back.

A number of websites report receiving this e-mail from "Alison", Rob Granito's wife, representing the man as a kind of Charlie Sheen figure, and offering interviews for three figure sums. But not Bleeding Cool. I wonder why? Here's the letter in full.

Dear Comics News, Blogs, and Journalists:

March 2011 was a month that the comics industry, and comics fandom, was not expecting! A month where suddenly comics websites became 'TMZ-like', and scandal and tabloid excitement erupted. This was due to the controversial Rob Granito.

We ask you to consider looking past personal feelings and judgement to consider the following:

-A Facebook Group about Robert Granito had over  3,000 members in less than a week

-Websites such as comicsalliance, Wired, and many others made Rob Granito a major headline

-An entire convention panel is due to Rob Granito, called 'How Should An Artist React To Being Granito'd'?

So, regardless of personal judgement you must admit that Rob Granito creates controversy- and controversy attracts attention. Rob Granito gets attention. Rob Granito gets people talking.

The Blog owner at All Things Geeky even explained how he had thousands of visitors to his site when he had never experienced that before. Rob Granito has gotten more attention and caused more talking amongst his detractors and his fans than any other comics professional!

Well as to the "Also, why did BleedingCool decide to break the Rob Granito story out of nowhere? Why was it pursued with such a fever?", let me tell you for free.

A customer bought a piece from Rob Granito at a previous show and discovered it had been swiped and that Rob wasn't the Batman animated TV series artist he'd claimed. They complained to me. I looked into it, e-mailed Rob about the claims, saw how they didn't stand up and when Rob stopped replying to mails, I ran the story. When other people added their own experiences with the man, I ran another story. That's it.

Can I have my $100 now?

Rob Granito's website has been closed down, as has his Facebook page.
